The ink system allows for an improved color gamut - meaning that it can print in more vivid colors than has been attainable in the past. The printing is bright and colorful, and very durable, because these are outdoor banners. Our banners are printed on a very durable vinyl material with solvent-based inks. When buying vinyl banners, always insist on true solvent-based inks because these are much, much more scratch resistant, and UV-resistant than vinyl banners printed with water based inks. And they are completely water-resistant as well.

Be aware that some suppliers of vinyl banners use dye-based or pigment-based inks. These will fade very quickly in bright light, and are not nearly as water-resistant as solvent-based inks.

Tips for Designing Large Vinyl Banners

At Vinyl Banners Canada there is design or setup charge for print-read files. For design and resolution questions see the BANNER FAQ. If you have a specific question, use the contact form on this page, email us, or give us a phone call. We can create unique designs for a small charge.

If you have a bit of graphic design experience, designing a vinyl banner is very straightforward. Compared to designing things like brochures, booklets or fliers, vinyl banners are very simple. An effective vinyl banner normally just consists of a background image, and major headline and a bit of descriptive text.

Even if you have no design experience getting a vinyl banner designed for you is also about as easy as it gets. Just let us know roughly what you have in mind. If you don't have a good photograph or two you might want to take the time to look at a commercial photo site like istockphoto.com where you can get images of almost anything for next to nothing - $1 for a web image and just $10 for an image that is 33mb.

Then you can use it as a background for your vinyl banner, put an interesting headline on it as in the illustration on the left, and voila, you've got an award winning vinyl banner design.

Here are some things to watch for when designing a vinyl banner...

1. Use software that handles CMYK full color output. There are at least three kinds of software you can use:

- Image editors like Photoshop, PhotoPaint, or PhotoImpact
- Page Layout programs like Quarkxpress, Pagemaker, or InDesign
- Illustration programs like Illustrator or CorelDraw

We do not recommend you use general office applications like Word, Wordperfect, Publisher, Excel, etc. If you have a specific inquiry, don't hesitate to ask us. You can ask a design or production related question by using the contact form on any page on the site.

2. Keep your design simple and striking. The best vinyl banner designs contain just two or three basic elements. Usually these will be a photograph, a large headline, and an "identifier" such as your company name, logo, or phone number.

3. Use bright colors. The most striking vinyl banners have lots of deep, bright colors.

4. Design your vinyl banner so it is readable for your target audience. If it is going on a building or beside a road on a fence, or on an outfield fence at a baseball or soccer field, MAKE SURE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE IS LARGE ENOUGH TO BE READ.

5. Provide images with sufficient resolution. For some advice on image resolution, see the Vinyl Banners FAQ.

6. Make sure your vinyl banner fits the area where you're going to mount it. Most people who are not familiar with signage will UNDERESTIMATE the required size. So don't guess at the size. Measure it carefully.

7. Consider alternative methods of mounting your vinyl banner. Grommets are the "default" method of mounting a banner on a wall or fence. But sometimes pole pockets are simpler and more efficient.
