Golf in California's Central Coast Area - GolfSlo.com

Avila Beach Golf

A very nice site was brought to my attention a few days ago -- GolfSlo.com featuring golf courses and accommodation in San luis Obispo County, "...the most affordable golf in California's Central Coast".

Among other things, the site offers an overview and guide to the golf courses in the area plus online tee time reservations. The site has also teamed up with Coastal Concierge to provide online booking at a number of premier hotels and luxury accommodations in the San Luis Obispo area.

Golfslo.com also provides links directly to the area's golf courses....some fine looking courses indeed, and the rates are very reasonable. For instance, Cypress Ridge, a fairly new Peter Jacobsen Signature Course is only $50 weekdays / $60 weekends. Pretty reasonable for a course of this quality (6803 yards from the back, slope 134).

Another track, Dairy Creek Golf Course is the newest of the three courses operated by the County of San Luis Obispo. Strung "links-like" on El Chorro Regional Park land just east of Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, it boasts some impressive elevation changes, forced carries over water and rocky arroyos. (6548 from the back, slope 127, $33 weekdays, $41 weekends.)

This site is well worth checking out.

For more information go to San Luis Obispo County Golf.

Website features long drive drivers

My search over the last year or so for a high quality performance driver culminated in building an SMT 455 Deep Bore that I call Big Red. This club was such a smashing success that I easily added between 30 and 40 yards to my average drive.

I had been a bit of a sceptic about the advantages of "technology". But no more. Big Red proved to me that head and shaft technology can make a big difference.

It has also convinced my two main golf buddies, Fritz and Sean, that they should at least consider something other than an off-the-shelf name brand club.

In fact Fritz just ordered a new unit from 300yards.com -- not an SMT, but an Alpha C830.2 with a super duper shaft from Accuflex. He was impressed enough with Big Red, but on doing a bit of research thought it would be interesting to get an alternative. The Alpha seems to have been equally successful among the long drive champions, and this will give us some basis for comparison.

300yards.com specializes in long drive drivers and carry three different brands in addition to their own: SMT, Alpha, and Bang. The site is a bit thin on info about the different models, perhaps because results are constantly changing. If you want to find out about current performance leaders, check out the individual sites (Bang, SMT, Alpha, longdrivers.com, and others.)

Recreation with Online Backgammon

by Amelie Mag

Backgammon is a fun game that takes two persons to play it. It's a board game that combines concentration and focus. It is somehow like chess. The basic principle is that you alternatively move the pieces on the squares of the board and try to get them from one part of it to the other. Each player has a color and he has to take into consideration when he makes the moves. The first one that gets all his pieces from one part of the board to the other and aligns them is the winner. These rules make online backgammon a very simple game that doesn't involve as much thinking or strategizing like chess does. It is accessible to both children (who can learn from it) and to experts who play backgammon for money.

Why We Play Games, Part 2

Last week we started to get into the motivation of the gamer. We discussed challenge and its ugly stepsister competition, two of the most common motivators. Today, we look at two more on the way to forming an overall model for what moves us.

Perhaps less common than the first two motivators, creativity is nonetheless an important driving force in the gamer psyche. Though at first gaming doesn't seem like a particularly creative act, what with its formalized rules and structured systems, there is much more room for self expression than one might think.

The Morris Men - New Golf Novel

Watch for the new golf novel by Stephen Mitchell called "The Morris Men"

The following is taken directly from the website...

"For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose the last hole?" - anon 1908

Through mutual distain, ‘The Morris Men’ gambled everything they possessed on the outcome of a golf challenge in 1921, to be repeated annually until either conceded, the eventual winner literally ‘taking all’. Only they took knowledge of their unresolved feud to their graves.

Three generations on, in the sedate Stratford upon Avon offices of Bainbridge & Bainbridge, solicitors, the consequences become all too apparent with the belated disclosure of their oddly bespoke contract. Life was about to dramatically change for two unsuspecting neighbours.

The peculiar ‘Morris Men Agreement’ had resurfaced and a quite different challenge was about to erupt … a matter of survival and enforced rivalry to find and claim the authentic trophy ahead of the other. But can its whereabouts be traced?

Between them, ‘The Morris Men’ have left their privileged great grandchildren an alarming and potentially ruinous legacy.

Visit The Morris Men website for more information.

Computer Traumas - by Ieuan Dolby - It has happened! Computer games have started to control my life on and off the screen. No complicated games like Age of Empires, just the simple one of Tetris. You know the one, where different shaped and colored bricks fall out of the sky and you have to arrange them in nice lines at the bottom? Hopefully with the end result of all colors matching in straight lines so that they can be removed and point gained.

We visited the WGV a couple of years ago shortly after it opened. It is located in St. Augustine, Florida, just south of Jacksonville, on the Atlantic side of the state.

The complex consists of the World Golf Hall of Fame, two golf courses, a number of resorts, meeting places, spas, and all the usual stuff you find at "destinations" these days. There's an IMax theatre too with the occasional golf movie playing.

Count Yogi Golf

An interesting article ("Search for the Secret of Golf") in the September, 05 issue of Golf Digest gives a brief overview of some of the more influential golf swing theorists of the last 75 years or so.

One of the most interesting is Count Yogi, an all but forgotten golfing wizard of the 1930s and 40s. His strident and flambouyant style got him banned from golf by the PGA of America.

For a list of his accomplishments and the opportunity to purchase his "system", visit The Count Yogi Golf Co.
